Will You Be Covered On The Continent?
In many respects the world is getting smaller - and it's now almost as easy to drive across Europe as it is to drive across the UK. However, while driving abroad may be simple, the level of car insurance required is still foreign to many of us.
All UK car insurance providers must supply the minimum level of cover when you travel across countries within the European Union. Yet for the many drivers who have comprehensive cover in Britain, this will mean their policies are downgraded when they travel overseas.
According to research from Defaqto, the independent financial data analyst, 21 per cent of car insurance policies available do not provide comprehensive foreign use as standard. Instead, it is necessary for policyholders to pay an additional premium to secure the level of cover they require.
There are variations too regarding the period you are covered for. Around a third of all insurers provide 60 days or less cover during a 12month period with 46 per cent offering 90 days or more free cover.
So before you travel abroad it's crucial that you check with your insurer and confirm the level of cover available to you. Even if you are certain that you are covered when driving abroad you should still get in contact with your car insurance provider before travelling as this often forms part of the policy's terms and conditions.
Avoiding an accident is important too - so prepare for the experience. Carry out a maintenance check on your car before leaving home and ensure your satellite navigation system is working. Take the time to familiarise yourself with the road rules of the country you're travelling to, too.
If your car insurance provider does not offer sufficient cover, use a comparison website to find cheap car insurance with suitable coverage.
